In the wake of the reported targeting of conservative groups by the Internal Revenue Service, congressional Republicans unveiled legislation Monday that would require the agency to fire employees found targeting such groups.
Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) unveiled matching bills in the House and Senate Monday that would require the IRS to fire any employee found "willfully" violating "the constitutional rights of a taxpayer," according to statements by both lawmakers.
Additionally, the employees would face fines and up to five years imprisonment for violating the law.
Rubio plans to introduce the bill as an amendment for a water resources development bill currently under consideration in the Senate. He called the reports about the IRS's targeting of certain political groups "an outrageous abuse of power."
At a news conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron Monday, President Obama also called the news “outrageous” and intolerable, and he called for those responsible to be held “fully accountable.”
