Schumer: Immigration overhaul will pass Senate by July 4

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)

The Senate's third-ranking Democrat predicted Sunday that a bipartisan immigration reform package will pass the full Senate with broad support by the Independence Day holiday.

"We're going to put immigration on the floor starting on June 10. I predict it will pass the Senate by July 4," Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on NBC's "Meet The Press." "We're hoping to get 70 votes -- up to 70 votes, which means a lot of Republicans."

Schumer is a member of the Senate "Gang of Eight" that crafted a broad rewrite of the nation's immigration laws that recently passed the Judiciary Committee.

Over in the House, some Republicans prefer to deal with immigration in a piecemeal manner. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) said on "Fox News Sunday" that he thinks "it's better do it with a step by step approach," but that the form of final legislation is not yet known.
