The war of words between Democrats and House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is escalating.

After Issa on Sunday called White House Press Secretary Jay Carney a "paid liar," former top White House adviser David Plouffe gave it right back to Issa, rehashing decades-old allegations against the congressman.

Issa in his earlier life was accused of both stealing three cars and committing arson, but he was never convicted.

As head of the House Oversight Committee, Issa wields significant power to investigate the actions of the administration -- a power he is exercising increasingly these days, particularly in regards to the IRS scandal.
