Newark Mayor Cory Booker (D) is planning to announce Saturday that he will enter the special election for the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg's (D-N.J.) seat, according to people with knowledge of his plans.

Booker's plans are somewhat uncertain, though, given much of the East Coast is currently in the path of Tropical Storm Andrea. But for now, the plan is to announce Saturday.

Booker will join a Democratic primary that so far includes Rep. Rush Holt and is likely to include Rep. Frank Pallone and potentially others.

Candidates have until Monday afternoon to collect the 1,000 signatures they need to get on the ballot.
