Newark Mayor Cory Booker made it official Saturday, formally announcing his campaign for the special election to complete the term of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.).

Booker, 44,  was joined at  his news conference by former senator Bill Bradley, according to the Associated Press. Bradley, who served three terms in the seat that Booker is seeking, called the mayor  "the right person for the right office at the right time."

The August 14 Democratic primary also is likely to include Rep. Rush Holt and Rep. Frank Pallone. The general election is set for Oct. 16.
