Wendy Davis raises close to $1 million

Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) has raised $933,000 in the last two weeks of June, her campaign announced Monday. That gives her more than $1 million in the bank.

There were over 15,290 donations, and the vast majority were less than $250. While most of the money ($580,000) came from inside the state, only about a third of the contributions were from Texas, a sign of how widely Democratic enthusiasm for her filibuster of abortion legislation spread.

“I am grateful and humbled by the outpouring of support," Davis said in a statement.

Davis' ability to raise money in the wake of her 13-hour filibuster was never in much doubt. But if she's serious about challenging Attorney General Greg Abbott in the governor's race next year, she'll need to do some serious catching up. Abbott has a $20 million-war chest.

Amber Mostyn, a very wealthy Davis supporter, says she would love to see the senator become governor but is still looking at whether the race is winnable. But Mostyn did pledge to match donations during the filibuster to Annie's List, a state group that backs Davis and other pro-abortion rights lawmakers.

Like Abbott, Davis is barred from raising money during the legislative session.

Earlier Monday, the Washington Post published an op-ed from Davis, titled: "Why I stood up for Texas women."
