During an interview that aired Sunday, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) dodged repeated questions about whether he would support a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants as part of a comprehensive immigration deal.

Speaking for a segment on CBS's "Face the Nation," the top Republican avoided sharing his personal views on the issue and said he cannot predict what kind of legislation will ultimately reach the House floor.

"I can't do that, and I don't want to do that," Boehner said. "My job in this process is to facilitate a discussion and to facilitate a process so the American people can see what we're doing and so the members understand that we're dealing with this in a deliberative way.

The speaker added that sharing his personal views on a potential pathway to citizenship would only complicate the immigration talks. "If I come out and say, 'I'm for this and I'm for that,' all I'm doing is making my job harder,' he said.
