Amid potential anxiety over the finer points of the White House strategy for the fall showdown over government funding and lifting the Treasury’s debt ceiling, Democrats paused Wednesday to mark the president's forthcoming birthday.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) presented Obama with a large, dark-chocolate birthday cake emblazoned with the presidential seal.

Obama turns 52 on Sunday.
