President Obama has canceled a previously scheduled trip to California next week in order to keep his attention squarely on building support for a resolution to launch a military strike against the Syrian government, the White House said Thursday.

Obama had been scheduled to travel to Los Angels on Monday, where he was slated to appear at the AFL-CIO convention. Instead, he will remain in Washington, where Congress is set to return next week. Votes on a resolution to approve a military strike against Syria in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack against its own people are soon expected on Capitol Hill. A Senate panel advanced a resolution out of committee on Wednesday.
