Rielle Hunter apologizes for Edwards affair

Rielle Hunter, the woman marred by scandal over her romantic relationship with John Edwards, apologized for the affair in a piece published on the Huffington Post Web site Tuesday morning.

"I am very sorry for my wrong, selfish behavior. Back in 2006, I did not think about the scope of my actions, how my falling in love with John Edwards, and acting on that love, could hurt so many people," Hunter wrote.

Hunter's apology comes as her new book -- a revised edition of one she previously wrote, and now says was a mistake -- is set for release.

"My publisher came up with the idea of me going through my book and annotating all of my regrets and mistakes," she wrote. "I liked that idea. I thought it was innovative and interesting, but of course the actual execution of that idea turned out to be excruciating. Owning your past mistakes is no day at the beach but I do believe it is an important endeavor to undertake."

Hunter also mentioned Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of John Edwards at the time of their affair. Elizabeth Edwards died of cancer in 2010.

"I hurt Elizabeth and her kids. I hurt her family. I hurt John's family. I hurt people that knew Elizabeth. I hurt people who didn't know Elizabeth but loved her from afar," Hunter wrote.

Hunter and John Edwards have a child together. Their relationship became a legal matter when Edwards faced trial over charges he used campaign money to cover up his affair. He was acquitted on one count in 2012.
