The White House has enlisted former budget official Jeffrey Zients to help fix the online enrollment process under the Affordable Care Act, White House press secretary Jay Carney confirmed Tuesday.

Carney said Zients, who is slated to take over the helm of the White House National Economic Council, would take on a "short term assignment: at the Department of Health and Human Services.

"He’s an expert in the field of effective management," Carney said, adding the agency would be "tapping his experience and expertise."

Zients, who served as acting director of the Office of Management and Budget, is known for his focus on making government function more efficiently. He also served as the administration's chief performance officer.

He has worked on resolving major Web site glitches during President Obama's first term, in initiatives such as the "cash for clunkers" program.
