Sen.-elect Cory Booker (D-N.J.) will be sworn in as a senator on Oct. 31, his campaign announced Wednesday.
Vice President Biden will swear Booker in at noon that day. He will become the first African American to represent New Jersey in the Senate.
A rising star in the Democratic Party, Booker defeated Republican Steve Lonegan by 11 points in an Oct. 16 special election to fill the seat once held by late-Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D). A regular on national cable shows and Sunday news programs, Booker will instantly become one of the upper chamber's highest-profile Democratic senators.
Booker is in his second term as mayor of Newark.
