Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced Monday that the Senate will take up the Employee Non-Discrimination Act in the upcoming session. The legislation would protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from employment discrimination.

"This work period, the Senate will consider the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would provide basic protections against workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity," Reid announced on the Senate floor.

The ENDA would prohibit discrimination by nonreligious entities against employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

It has been introduced in every Congress for the last two decades.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee passed the legislation by a 15-7 vote in July. Three Republicans on the committee voted for it.
