Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) says he will make an announcement in January about whether he'll run for governor in 2015.

Vitter has long been rumored as a potential successor to outgoing Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), who is term-limited. He told AP he is sending an e-mail to supporters and discussing his next move with his family.

"This is the logical time to do it, if I'm ever going to do it," he said. "There are strong arguments in either direction, but the general question in my mind is where I think I can make the most positive contribution."
