President Obama will hold an event at the White House on Tuesday to push Congress to renew the now-lapsed extension of long-term unemployment benefits.
The event will be held in the East Room of the White House, where the president will be joined by people whose unemployment benefits have ended as a result of Congress not renewing the program and those who have benefited from the program.
Obama will make the case that the failure to extend the benefits will hurt the economy as a whole, in addition to hurting the 1.3 million people who were slated to lose their benefits on New Year's Day.
Last week, Obama placed calls from his vacation in Hawaii to Sens. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) and Jack Reed (D-R.I.) expressing support for their bill to extend the unemployment insurance for an additional three months.
