Comedian Joel McHale will host the White House Correspondents' Association's annual dinner this May, the group announced Friday.

McHale, best known for hosting "The Soup" on E! and for his role on the NBC series "Community," follows a long line of TV hosts who used the event to skewer America's leading politicians. This year's dinner is the 100th in the history of the WHCA.

"We’re thrilled that Joel will headline the dinner when we celebrate our centennial," WHCA President Steven Thomma said in a statement. "He's sharp, funny and just the type of comic who can navigate the unique challenge of our dinner, making fun of Democrats, Republicans and especially the news media. Washington can use a little good-natured ribbing."

The dinner -- perhaps the most widely known event of its kind in Washington -- will be held May 3.
