A major snowstorm approaching Washington has forced the cancellation of all votes scheduled in the House and Senate on Monday.

Aides to top leaders said Sunday afternoon that votes originally scheduled for Monday evening in both chambers would be postponed until Tuesday. All other legislative business is also canceled, they said.

The decision comes as forecasters expect at least five to nine inches of snow to fall across much of the D.C. region Monday, which is likely to lead to widespread flight cancellations across the country and make it difficult for lawmakers to return in time for votes.

Monday evening votes have been delayed or postponed in the Senate several times in the past year due to inclement weather.
