Boehner on seeking reelection as speaker: ‘It won’t even be close’

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), shrugging aside suggestions that a new condo he bought in Florida is a sign he's ready to retire, says in a new interview that he's in very good position to run for speaker again.

Boehner told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he feels like he's better-positioned than he was after the 2012 election, when a dozen House Republicans declined to back him.

"It won’t even be close,” Boehner said.

“I frankly think I’m in better shape with my own caucus than I have been any time in the last three years," Boehner said. "I think they understand me better.”

Boehner reiterated that the condo purchase "has nothing to do with my future.”

Despite Boehner's words, at least one tea party group has begun to wage a public campaign to take him out, with the Senate Conservatives Fund openly urging supporters to strip him of his speaker's gavel. So far, other groups haven't joined in.
