Bush family scion George P. Bush (R) took a step closer to becoming land commissioner of Texas Tuesday, easily defeating his only primary opponent.

With 5 percent of precincts reporting, Bush led David Watts 75 percent to 25 percent. The Associated Press called the race for Bush shortly after all polls closed in the state.

The nephew of former president George W. Bush and son of former Florida governor Jeb Bush (R), George P. Bush will start the general election as a substantial favorite against Democrat John Cook.

Land commissioner is a powerful position in Texas. It could be a good launching board for Bush to pursue higher office down the road, should he win the job this fall.
