Democrats have redoubled their efforts to turn the billionaire Koch brothers into the conservative bogeymen of the 2014 election, but at least one Republican is coming to the brothers' defense.

"I think the Koch brothers are two of the most patriot Americans..," Vitter said at an event Tuesday in Shreveport, La., according to video from a Democratic tracker.

Vitter, being pressed by a questioner about the millions of dollars the brothers have spent on on behalf of Republicans already, said the money is going to a good cause and that the First Amendment covers political speech, too.

"I'll be honest with you: My reaction is God bless the Koch brothers," Vitter said. "They're fighting for our freedoms."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has been the most vocal critic of the Kochs -- brothers Charles and David. He has said recently on the Senate floor that they are trying to "buy America" and that they are "un-American."
