Top aide says Obama is ‘madder than hell’ about VA scandal

White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough says President Obama is very upset about reported cover-ups at veterans' hospitals and long waits for treatment at VA facilities that have drawn widespread scrutiny.

"The president is madder than hell. I've got the scars to prove it," McDonough said in an interview with CBS News's "Face The Nation" that was broadcast Sunday.

In testimony on Capitol Hill last week, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki said he was "mad as hell" about reported problems with the VA, including allegations that clinics in Phoenix and Fort Collins, Colo., schemed to conceal the records of patients who endured long waits for treatment.

"We have seen. obviously. the reports out of places like Phoenix and Fort Collins and North Carolina, and we're going to get to the bottom of those things, fix them and ensure that they don't happen again," McDonough said.

He also defended Shinseki.

"General Shinseki continues to work this every single day," McDonough said, "and he will continue to work these issues until they're fixed."
