Rep. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) and Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) each hold single-digit leads over their Republican competitors for U.S. Senate, a new poll released Tuesday shows.

The NBC News/Marist poll shows Peters leading former secretary of state Terri Lynn Land (R) 43 percent to 37 percent. In Colorado, Udall leads Rep. Cory Gardner (R) 48 percent to 41 percent.

Udall is boosted by double-digit leads among women (+12) and Latinos (+31). Meanwhile, President Obama's image continues to be a worry for Democrats: His approval rating stands at just 40 percent in both states. Obama won Colorado and Michigan in 2012.

Gardner and Udall are officially the nominees of their respective parties. In Michigan, Peters and Land are widely expected to win nomination next month.

Republicans need to pick up six seats to win back control of the Senate. Michigan and Colorado are two of about a dozen of the most competitive races.

The governors of Colorado and Michigan are facing competitive reelection campaigns, the poll shows. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) leads former congressman Mark Schauer (D) 46 percent to 44 percent, an advantage within the poll's margin of error. Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) leads former congressman Bob Beauprez (R) 49 percent to 43 percent.

The surveys of registered voters in each state were conducted from July 7-10.
