Obama will travel to Oregon Friday to meet with families of shooting victims

President Obama will travel to Roseburg, Ore., Friday to visit privately with families of victims from last week's shooting there, according to White House officials.

According to one White House official, who asked for anonymity to discuss the event in advance, "further details about the president's travel to Oregon will be made available in the coming days."

Obama was headed to the Pacific Northwest already on Friday to headline a fundraiser on behalf of Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), the first stop in a multi-city trip out West. After stopping in Seattle, he is headed to California for a mix of official and personal events over the Columbus Day weekend.

In the past Obama has gone to communities that have been the targets of either mass shootings or natural disasters, and his activities there have ranged from memorial speeches before large audiences to closed-door sessions with grieving families. In April 2014, for example, the president journeyed to the small town of Oso, Wash., to meet with those who had suffered losses in a landslide that claimed the lives of 41 people.
