Sanders's comments were made during an appearance on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow show on Tuesday night. And they immediately prompted condemnations from abortion rights groups and the Clinton campaign.
"I have friends and supporters in the Human Rights Fund, in Planned Parenthood," Sanders said. "But you know what, Hillary Clinton has been around there for a very, very long time and some of these groups are, in fact, part of the establishment."
Offended by the suggestion, Clinton addressed the issue directly here, noting that the groups are still fighting against Republicans, who she said are trying to strip them of their rights.
"I wish we weren’t fighting all the time to protect women’s rights to protect women's health," Clinton said. "If it were part of the establish then it would be time for all of us to stop working so hard to defend it and fight for it."
"That’s just not the case. We have to keep working to make sure people are not taken advantage of, not stripped of their rights," Clinton said. "The Republicans want to do all of that."
