So, it’s official: Vice President Biden will not seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016.

The announcement caps weeks of speculation. Some pundits — including at least one lawmaker — swore the vice president was about to toss his hat in the ring. But Biden suggested he was out of time, and spoke of his family’s ongoing grief at the loss of his son, Beau:

“I have concluded that it has closed,” he said of the window to enter the Democratic contest … “Beau is our inspiration,” the vice president said of his son who died earlier this year of brain cancer. “Unfortunately, I believe we are out of time. The time necessary to mount a campaign for the nomination.”
