Just a quick throwback now that Rudy Giuliani is open about his longing to be attorney general.

Giuliani has been waiting a long, long time for that position. And we know that because Saturday Night Live was making fun of him for it back in 1997.

Everyone knows the famous “Janet Reno Dance Party” sketch, in which Will Ferrell donned drag to mock the late attorney general’s affect and voice. But it’s easy to forget then-New York mayor Giuliani had a prominent role in one of the skits.

In one episode, Ferrell-as-Reno challenged Giuliani to a boxing match to prove he wasn’t jealous of her position leading the Justice Department.

“So how does it feel to be interviewed by the Attorney General of the United States, the job you only dream about having? It must feel like crap,” Ferrell said.

The skit ends with Giuliani admitting that “Janet Reno is the boss of me.” Click below to watch the whole thing.

And for reference, here’s what Giuliani told CNN’s Chris Cuomo Thursday morning (hat tip to our colleague Callum Borchers):

CUOMO: Do you have it in you to be attorney general? Do you feel that you have the energy?

GIULIANI: Oh my God.

CUOMO: Do you feel that you have the desire?

GIULIANI: I certainly have the energy, and there’s probably nobody that knows the Justice Department better than me.

CUOMO: So, nobody’s better than you. You just said — hold on. I got you. I finally got you. It took me 35 years. You just said, “If I couldn’t point to three other people who are as good as me, then yes, if it’s just me.” You just said, “Nobody knows it better than I do.”

GIULIANI: Well, I was an assistant U.S. attorney. I was the associate attorney general of the United States, third-ranking official under Ronald Reagan. I’ve argued in front of the Supreme Court of the United States. I’ve argued in almost every circuit. And I tried, as a personal lawyer and U.S. attorney, over 50 cases.

CUOMO: It’s a good résumé.

GIULIANI: So I know the bottom of the Justice Department, and I know the top.
