Cavaliers Coach Mike London personally offered Jackson a scholarship during a visit to spring football practice in Charlottesville last month. On Sunday night, Jackson orally committed to stay in the commonwealth.

“A U-Va. degree is a globally recognized education,” Jackson said. “That really sold me.”

Woodgrove Coach Mike Skinner talked Jackson through the decision and reminded him that he could field more offers. But the coach also said if Jackson isolated the opportunity he wanted, then he should go for it.

“He’s not that guy that wants to get 20 or 25 offers and do that switch of the hat thing,” Skinner said. “He’s a real intelligent kid.”

According to Skinner, Virginia will tab Jackson as an outside linebacker in its 3-4 defensive alignment.

The opportunity to stay “relatively close to home,” to play for a coaching staff that impressed him and to plug in to a scheme that capitalizes on his athleticism proved to be the right mix for the burgeoning converted basketball player.

“It seems like the perfect fit for me,” Jackson said. “I can see myself making a lot of plays down there.”

At Woodgrove, Jackson will play out his senior year as a team captain, adding to his defensive end duties by seeing time at linebacker and wide receiver.

“He’s too talented not to be on both sides of the ball,” Skinner said.

Already holding offers from Old Dominion, Hampton and Ohio, Jackson received scholarship offers from Duke and Yale since visiting Virginia. Skinner said the defender has been out of town on recruiting trips, camps and combines every weekend for the past six weeks, so now he can relax.
