All last season, even as Will Ferguson piled up points for Herndon, the senior point guard figured that taking a post-grad year at prep school was the route for him.

After a mid-season transfer from O’Connell in 2012, Ferguson said he fell behind academically and on the recruiting trail, leading him to explore a reclassification and a move to Massanutten Military Academy.

But during a visit to the College of Central Florida this week, Ferguson quickly realized that attending the junior college program would best position him for his dream — playing high-level Division I basketball. In turn, the Herndon point guard signed Wednesday to spend the next two years at the College of Central Florida.

“I was close to going to Massanutten, but as I talked with Central Florida, people kept telling me how nice it was, and once I got there, I felt really comfortable,” Ferguson said Thursday after returning from his visit. “They have a wonderful coaching staff and it doesn’t really feel like a junior college; it’s more like a four-year university.”

There, Ferguson will join a program that won 34 games en route to its first NJCAA title this past season. In the 6-foot-2 guard, the Patriots possess a athletic playmaker who can fill it up from the perimeter and off the dribble with his quick first step. Ferguson averaged a team-high 22.4 points for Herndon this past winter, earning Virginia AAA Northern Region Player of the Year and third-team All-Met honors.

The speedy guard had a chance to show off his skills Tuesday during an open gym session at the College of Central Florida campus. Ferguson said the coaches came away impressed, as did he, of his potential at the program.

“The coaches said they thought I could play a mid-major or high-level Division I program, so they were happy to have me,” Ferguson said. “It seems like almost all of their players end up at Division I programs, so with that opportunity, along with the good academic setting, I feel like it’s the best place for me.”
