Clinton Christian forward Develle Phillips chooses DePaul

Clinton Christian’s Develle Phillips committed to play basketball at DePaul on Sunday, capping his first official visit with a pledge to Blue Demons Coach Oliver Purnell.

“I was looking for a place where I fit in well, and I really like the environment at DePaul,” Phillips said in a Sunday phone interview. “The city [of Chicago] is nice and I can’t even count the number of academic opportunities they offer, and with the NBA not promised, I want to have something to fall back on with my degree.”

As a junior, Phillips averaged 7.2 points per game for the Eagles to help lead them to the Capital Beltway League championship and the Maryland Private Schools tournament title game. Phillips’s length and spurts of energy in the paint make him a solid rebounder as well as a raw yet capable scorer.

“The coaches said I should expect to play a lot as a freshman,” Phillips said, “so in my senior year, I’ll be working on scoring more, being more assertive on offense and my versatility.”
