The high school basketball season gets underway for much of the Washington area Tuesday, and several of the top girls’ basketball teams likely have their sights set on this coming weekend, when a collection of regional powers will convene at Paul VI for the Art Turner Memorial Tipoff Classic.

The event will feature 25 teams from around the country, with many of the matchups pitting the best local teams against some of the best competition from out of town, including Neumann-Gorretti, the Philadelphia-based school that finished atop the national polls last year.

Among the 18 games on the schedule, more than 30 college prospects will play in Fairfax this coming weekend and more than 60 college coaches have already registered to attend the three-day event, beginning Friday. Six of the Washington area teams participating finished last season ranked in The Post’s final top 20 poll: Paul VI, Georgetown Visitation, Whitman, Edison, Good Counsel and Stonewall Jackson. St. John’s, Elizabeth Seton, Bullis, Holy Cross, T.C. Williams, Spalding and Carroll will also be featured.

This, of course, is not the only big girls’ basketball event over the coming month in the area, because these showcase tournaments are becoming more and more prevalent every year. There’s also the She Got Game Classic, which will be held on Dec. 11-13 at schools across the District and feature more than 20 Washington area teams. In addition, the 7th annual Title IX Holiday Invitational Classic will again be held at the D.C. Armory with games featuring 64 teams from across the country on Dec. 28-30.

One area team, however, has already gotten a big win over a nationally ranked team. Over the Thanksgiving weekend, National Christian participated in the Tennessee Turkey Jamm in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and began the year 3-0, including an upset over Blackman (Tenn.), which was No. 3 in the country in USA Today’s preseason poll.

In the Eagles’ 58-52 win, junior guard Mykea Gray led the charge with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. National Christian.
