You don’t have to be a high school volleyball expert to know that signing up for an event called the Tournament of Champions is probably going to lead to a tough weekend. This past weekend, Middleburg Academy coach Maureen DiClementi took her team to the tournament, which featured teams from around Virginia that were state champions or finalists from the previous year, knowing it would be a test.

Middleburg was not only coming off its second loss to Flint Hill, but it also faces depth and endurance concerns that would be unimaginable to most of the top teams in the area. With only nine girls on the roster, the Dragons have to play an efficient and smart style to not only win but also stay healthy.

“We have to be strategic at all times, even in practices,” DiClementi said. “We can’t overuse them.”

The Dragons fared well against tough competition in the Tournament of Champions, going 2-2 with wins over Cave Spring and North Side.

“We left there with some bags of ice and some Band-Aids,” DiClementi said. “But I was really happy with how they competed.”
