Adrian Dantley, ex-NBA star, says crossing-guard job is meaningful way to fill his days

Adrian Dantley still doesn’t quite understand why everyone was so stunned to learn he’s working as a part-time crossing guard in Silver Spring these days. Hey, even independently wealthy former NBA stars need a meaningful way to fill their days.

“It’s not a big thing to me,” the DeMatha grad, 58, who lives not far from his post at Eastern Middle School, told us. “I just do it. I have a routine. I exercise, I go to work, I go home. I have a spring break next week. I have a summer off, just like when I was a basketball player.”

The Deadspin story that broke the news of Dantley’s $14K-a-year retirement gig last week suggested that the player, always frugal with his 15 seasons of pro-ball earnings and seven of coaching, took it so he wouldn’t have to pay out of pocket for health insurance. “Nah, I just did it for the kids,” he said. “I just didn’t want to sit around the house all day.” Though Dantley declined to speak to Deadspin, he has since fielded calls from reporters across the country, including ABC News and CNN.

Lessons learned in seven months on a corner: “I’ve definitely saved two lives. I’ve almost gotten hit by a car twice. And I would say 70 percent of the people who go across my route are on their telephone or on their BlackBerry, text-messaging. I never would have seen that if I had not been on the post.”
