“Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber.”

— A note Justin Bieber left in the guestbook at the Anne Frank House on Friday after touring the Amsterdam hiding place of the young Holocaust victim and diarist. Museum staff relayed his comments via Facebook Saturday, setting off a vicious social-media cycle of condemnation (“that little idiot is way too full of himself”), scorn (“Anne wouldn’t have been an Belieber. . . she had much better taste that that”) and heated backlash-to-the-backlash (“ironic that all of you are spewing hate. . . you are demonstrating the very behavior that took her life”). Who knows: Bieber’s musings may have been inspired by seeing Frank’s bedroom wall, covered with photos of teen idols of an earlier era, like Deanna Durbin and Rudy Vallee. The 19-year-old pop star, now on a European tour, played a concert in the nearby Dutch city of Arnhem.
