Katie O’Malley always steered clear of high-fashion photo shoots until Baltimore Style finally persuaded her to pose. So Maryland’s first lady probably wasn’t quite prepared for the massive army of stylists and photographers who descended on Government House in Annapolis this spring.
Which may explain the results in the magazine’s new issue. The Baltimore City District Court judge looks fantastic — but, whoa, how’s this going to play in Iowa if Martin O’Malley runs for president? In one photo, she stands barefoot on the mansion’s dining room table in a vintage caftan and studded leather cuff — with the chairs tipped over. (Are those lightbulbs on the table?) In another, antique silver pieces are scattered around her feet.
What does it mean?!?! The magazine did not return our calls for comment; a rep for the governor assured us there was no underlying message: “They were simply part of a fashion editorial and were meant to be artistic and creative.”
Gov. O’Malley was a fan, though, reports our colleague John Wagner. “I’m proud of her,” he said, “and it was certainly an artistic side of her that people don’t see when she is wearing a black robe on the bench.”
