A continuing series on the stars who bring their causes to D.C. Thursday’s visitor: Krist Novoselic.

Occasion: Panel on alternatives to gerrymandered voting districts.
Venue: Auditorium at NYU’s D.C. center.

Bona fides: Co-founder/bassist of Nirvana; Washington state activist; chair of electoral-reform advocates Fair Vote, which co-hosted the event.

Co-stars: Reps. James Clyburn and Keith Ellison, scholars Norm Ornstein, Md. State Sen. Jamie Raskin, among other panelists.

What he wants: Alternative voting systems, such as multi-seat districts and ranked-preference ballots, which he argues could reduce polarization.

How he looked: Troubadour-formal. Vest, pinstriped pants, bowler hat, tie, multi-colored satchel.

Complex issue! Why this?: Novoselic told us that while fighting music-labeling efforts in the early ’90s, “I recognized all these barriers to participation”; he gravitated to electoral reform after being disenchanted by the violence of the ’99 WTO protests. “We need to have a change, and these are constitutionally-protected and peaceful.”
