The Congressional Black Caucus Gala week of events continued Friday with the Essence magazine and Southern Company’s pre-gala awards show, “An Evening of Excellence.” Honors presented included a lifetime achievement award for Dr. Jesse J. Lewis, Sr. and a civil advocacy award for “The View” host and comedienne Sherri Shepherd. But the evening quickly turned from awards night to Gala kickoff party when Bell Biv DeVoe took the stage and performed a flashback of hits and dances from 1983 through the ’90s. But what song really got the room moving? “Poison,” of course, which included on-stage audience participation from Shepherd and actress/author Victoria Rowell.
