Briefly: Gabrielle Giffords, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, Bob Costas

Also in the Washington Post:

Things got slightly uncomfortable when Gabrielle Giffords toured a gun show in New York over the weekend, in a scene that was “mostly welcoming — with a few hostile undertones,” Michael Hill reports. Giffords, making her first visit to a gun show since she was shot in 2011, was greeted with some boos when she showed up with her husband, Mark Kelly, and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. Giffords attended in support of a voluntary agreement spearheaded by Schneiderman promoting gun sale safety, including background checks for buyers.

Say goodbye to Alice McKinley — legendary children’s author Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is retiring the famed (and famously frequently banned) character, who guided generations of girls through the mortifying trials and tribulations of the teenage years. In this Style profile, Monica Hesse caught up with Naylor, who lives in Gaithersburg and apparently makes excellent blueberry muffins. The final book in the series, “Now I’ll Tell You Everything” — which reveals Alice goes on to become a Terp! — is released Tuesday.

DC Sports Bog has Bob Costas’s full thoughts on the topic, which ran during Sunday night’s (depressing) Redskins-Cowboys game on NBC. “It’s an insult, a slur, no matter how benign the present day intent,” Costas said. “It’s fair to say that for a long time now, and certainly in 2013, no offense has been intended. But if you take a step back, isn’t it clear to see how offense might legitimately be taken?”
