The always-entertaining champion figure skater Johnny Weir is officially retiring from the sport, he announced Wednesday on the “Today” show. Instead, he’ll take his talents to NBC, where he’ll become an announcer and help the network cover the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The AP reports that Weir, married to lawyer Victor Voronov, may use his new job as a platform to discuss Russia’s anti-gay laws, a major controversy going into the Olympics.

Weir, a gold-medalist who has been competing for 16 years, said he felt he wasn’t fit enough to compete in the 2014 Winter Games. So he’s giving broadcasting a try, though the frequently-outspoken athlete said, “Hopefully, I can use my words properly and talk intelligently. I’m excited for the journey.”
