Terry McAuliffe wins: Time to meet the new first family

You’ve heard plenty about Terry McAuliffe – now it’s time to meet the new first family.

Like outgoing Gov. Bob McDonnell, the governor-elect has five children – and two are living with their parents, which should bring some of McAuliffe’s trademark playfulness to the governor’s mansion in Richmond. (But no engagements that we’ve heard of, which should avoid those awkward wedding sponsorships that dogged McDonnell’s tenure.)

Unlike their high-profile dad, the rest of the Irish Catholic clan has mostly managed to fly under the radar. The three eldest children called the 2000 Democratic National Convention to order because Dad chaired the event . . . and because they looked pretty adorable with the gavel. And, of course, they’ve been tight with Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton for two decades. But despite being based in McLean, they kept a low profile until Tuesday, when the entire family gathered onstage for the election-night victory party.

A brief look at the family:

* The press-shy matriarch, Dorothy, 50, is the yin to her husband’s peripatetic yang. In his 2007 autobiography, McAuliffe admits racing out to a press party while his wife was in labor with their fourth child and stopping at a fundraiser after the birth of his fifth — while Dorothy and the newborn waited in the car. Somehow it works for them: The couple celebrated their 25th anniversary last month.

* The eldest, Dori, is a 22-year-old senior at Colby College in Maine. The international studies major is a serious lacrosse player, as she was at Potomac School in McLean; she also ran indoor track and cross country. Her Twitter handle: “@whatchamcauliff.”

* Son Jack, 20, is in his third year at the U.S. Naval Academy and a standout on Navy’s rugby team. He’s a grad of Gonzaga College High School, where he was a member of the All-Met rugby team.

* Mary, 19, is a freshman at Wake Forest; she graduated from Langley High School in June.

* The youngest kids – Sally, 14, and Peter, 11 -are students at Potomac School in McLean.

McAuliffe’s rep didn’t get back to us on when the family will make the move to Richmond.
