Viva Las Vegas, Britney Jean

Singer Britney Spears will begin a two-year residency in Las Vegas starting Friday. “Britney: Piece of Me” will be staged at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, a newly renovated 7,000-seat theater. Usually residencies are for older performers, such as Cher and Celine Dion; Kurt Melien, vice president of Caesars Entertainment, tells USA Today that the Spears stint is aimed at Las Vegas’s growing audience of college students and young professionals. “The goal of this residency is to launch the first contemporary pop residence for a younger generation,” Melien said. “This is about a shifting demo in Vegas, and Britney being the first pop residency shows that Vegas is really becoming a younger city.”Some critics say that the weak debut of her latest album — “Britney Jean” had 107,000 first-week sales, the lowest total of her career — suggest that the star’s shine has dimmed. But Billboard editorial director Bill Werde has confidence in the “Perfume” performer. “If she shows up on opening night and brings it — really dazzles people with the Britney of old, who could outdance and outperform almost anyone — this is going to be a really meaningful thing for her career.”

Roger and I couldn’t have asked for a better Christmas gift this year!” she wrote. “We are so excited to share this new chapter of our lives with you as we become parents and create more memories with a new addition to our family!” Baby Mathews is due in July.

Bound 2 be sued

Rapper Kanye West is being sued for violation of copyright infringement laws on his latest single, “Bound 2.” According to the Hollywood Reporter, former soul singer Ricky Spicer of the Ponderosa Twins Plus One filed a lawsuit on Monday saying the rapper, 36, used Spicer’s vocals without permission or compensation. The vocals in question were sampled from The Ponderosa Twins Plus One’s 1971 song “Bound” — recorded when Spicer was 12 years old.

“My mom threw out our tree before Christmas Day because ‘it was too messy.’ ”
