Ryan Seacrest might be mugging for the cameras and Jenny McCarthy could be making out with a sailor, but Times Square’s New Year celebration will once again feature a slightly more distinguished guest tasked with pressing the button that drops the famous ball — Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
Organizers of the iconic event announced that Sotomayor, a Bronx native and the first Hispanic woman to sit on the high court, would lead Times Square revelers (and those of us following along from our sofas) in a countdown, then “push the Waterford Crystal button” signaling the ball drop.
Previous button-pushers at the glittery event have included heavyweights such as Kofi Annan, Hillary Clinton, and Colin Powell. Which might mean that the job takes a little bit of gravitas.
Let’s hope that wielding a gavel is good practice.
