Barbara Bush remains hospitalized
Barbara Bush spent New Year’s in a Houston-area hospital after being admitted for early signs of pneumonia Monday. Jim McGrath, the Bush family’s spokesman, released a statement late Tuesday saying that the former first lady, 88, was admitted to Methodist Hospital in Houston’s Texas Medical Center for treatment for a “respiratory related issue.” She had already had many visitors, including her husband, former president George H.W. Bush, and family members and was receiving “fantastic care.”
In November 2008, Bush underwent surgery for a perforated ulcer and had heart surgery in 2009. On Wednesday, a spokesman for her husband’s office said that her condition had not changed.
President Obama, who’s been vacationing in Hawaii, issued a statement Wednesday wishing the former first lady well. “Michelle and I send our best wishes to Mrs. Bush for a speedy recovery. Barbara is blessed to have both a loving, supportive family by her side and a vibrant spirit that we hope will have her feeling better soon. I know I speak for Americans everywhere when I say that our thoughts and prayers are with Barbara and her family on this New Year’s Day.”
Here come the brides (and brides-to-be)
On New Year’s Eve, Kaley Cuoco married Ryan Sweeting in a fire-and-ice-themed wedding at Hummingbird Nest Ranch in Santa Susana, Calif. The “Big Bang Theory” actress, 28, announced her engagement to tennis pro Sweeting, 26, in September, just three months after they were first spotted together. The bride wore a pink Vera Wang gown to the ceremony in front of about 150 guests, and, of course, Instagrammed a pic.
Another sports power couple is in the making. Golf star Rory McIlroy, 24, proposed to tennis ace Caroline Wozniacki, 23, on New Year’s Eve while watching fireworks in Sydney, Australia. “Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang!” Wozniacki tweeted alongside a photo of her new ring. “I said YES!!!!”
“Continuum” star Rachel Nichols announced her engagement to boyfriend Michael Kershaw on Monday, via Instagram. Nichols, 33, was previously married to “Star Trek” producer Scott Stuber but the couple split in 2009 after seven months of marriage.
