Some long-dirty laundry got an airing this weekend, as the first wife of the late Rep. C.W. “Bill” Young stepped forward with a very different picture of the Florida Republican, who was eulogized after his death in October as a genial family man.

Young’s first wife, Marian Young, tells the Tampa Bay Times that the longtime appropriator began an affair with his secretary in the early 1980’s and fathered a child with her. Young finally divorced Marian in 1985 and married his mistress, Beverly Angello, eight days later in the “in the House prayer room of the U.S. Capitol,” the Times reports.

Beverly Young became a fixture in Washington, where she was among the more active congressional spouses. She got attention in 2006 for getting ejected by Capitol Police from the House chamber during the State of the Union address. The “Support the Troops” T-shirt she sported violated the prohibition on demonstrations.

The tawdry details of the affair were never aired because the divorce records were sealed, and Marian Young wasn’t talking — until now. Other ugly bits: Young was mostly estranged from the three children from his first marriage, and his second wife sought to exclude them from his funeral. Asked why no photos of them were included among the tributes, she told the Times: “Hell, no. Why would I do that? Why should they be? They played no part in his life whatsoever. Consider that courtesy of me.”

The story apparently didn’t sit well with Bill Young, Jr., the eldest child from the late congressman’s second marriage. He lashed out on Twitter, blasting the Timesfor “lies” and calling Young’s first wife “bitter.”
