Laura Bush can’t wait to turn the tables on the first man to occupy the position she held as the spouse of a president. “Maybe we should be that way about the First Gentleman, also, and really critique the way they look all the time,” she said in an interview with C-SPAN, referring to the scrutiny so often heaped on first spouses — who have all been women. “Their choice of tie, or their hairstyle…or maybe their weight.”

The interview is part of a series on first ladies airing on C-SPAN, which also released a few highlight videos of the Monday night episode focusing on first lady Barbara Bush. Other juicy tidbits: In another video, the elder Bush says she is “a great respecter” of Michelle Obama, and resents her critics’ focus on combating obesity who think “government shouldn’t tell you what to eat.”

“Well, somebody’s got to tell these people what to eat,” she says.
