Washington’s mayoral race isn’t likely to approach New York levels of celebrity wattage anytime soon, but it’s getting a little brighter. Andy Shallal, the Busboys and Poets owner who’s launched a bid for the Democratic nomination, has picked up two more boldface endorsements: local best-selling author and TV producer George Pelecanos and folk musician Peter Yarrow (he was one-third of the famed trio Peter, Paul and Mary).
Pelecanos, whose credits include the HBO series “The Wire” and “Treme,” talked up the restaurateur/candidate during a Jan.13 fundraiser at the Georgetown home of philanthropists Ken Grossinger and Micheline Klagsbrun, and Yarrrow is slated to perform at a Jan. 30 fundraiser.
Actor Danny Glover appeared alongside Shallal earlier this month in support of his campaign.
It’s highly unusual for stars to get involved in a Washington mayor’s race. But Shallal, with his network of high-profile activist pals, seems to be changing the playbook.
