Rep. Donna F. Edwards’s “comedy” routine didn’t go over so well at Thursday night’s Washington Press Club Foundation dinner. But the Maryland Democrat shone from the dais in one respect — that diamond on her left hand was sparkling.

The bling prompted a tweet from Roll Call’s Heard on the Hill: “Breaking: @repdonnaedwards spotted sporting a “giant rock” @washpressclub dinner; is now officially engaged.”

She gave us the full account: her boyfriend of five years, attorney Nelson Jones, popped the question on Christmas Eve, while the congresswoman was cooking dinner for 20. She took a break for a glass of wine, she says, when he made the move. “Johnny Mathis was playing, and the next thing I knew he was on his knee.”

Edwards, 55, is divorced.
