Nationals’ Doug Fister engaged to girlfriend from back home

When spring training is over in April Nats starting pitcher Doug Fister will arrive in D.C. with more than just a great arm, he’ll have a new fiance on his arm too. The Nationals recently confirmed that Fister and girlfriend Ashley Phelps are engaged. According to Phelps’ Twitter account, which featured a snap shot of two champagne flutes mid clink, Fister popped the question in January not too long after the former Detroit Tiger was traded to Washington.

No other official details about the couple’s upcoming nuptials have been released, but Phelps, a high school teacher and water polo coach, did find the time to visit her famous future-husband over Valentine’s Day weekend. The two California natives played mini-golf and posed for pictures only the young and in love take, with a heart shaped sign that read “sweet hearts.”

In a recent radio interview Fister said the couple met “back in the sixth grade, so we’ve known each other for a long time.” We’ll say.
