We reported earlier this week that the annual Corcoran Ball is still on, even as the venerable gallery itself is facing an uncertain future. For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we’re throwing waaay back — to a 1959 article in the Post, which itself cited a story about a ball at the Corcoran held in 1871.

The fifties-era sought to replicate the Victorian one — and instead of the slinky evening gowns that are de rigeur these days, attendees planned to don “heirloom dresses” for the occasion.
