Forget Facebook status updates. This is how Secretary of State John Kerry announces the birth of a new grandchild: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu breaks the news for him – at the White House, in front of a gaggle of cameras.

Netanyahu, flanked by President Obama, told reporters that the topic of the Monday visit wasn’t just diplomatic, but celebratory, too: “an opportunity to congratulate Secretary Kerry on the birth of his new granddaughter.”

And he gave a first-hand account of how Kerry learned that his daughter Alexandra and her husband Julian had just welcomed a baby girl — during their meeting, a staffer passed him a phone with the happy news. “We’ve had many productive meetings, but this is truly a productive meeting,” Netanyahu said.

Globe-trotting granddad Kerry was able to drop by New York to meet the baby before jetting off to Kiev.
