“Frankie’s work helped open minds and bring people together,” wrote President Obama in a letter to the family of the iconic Chicago DJ, Frankie Knuckles, who died in March. Known as the “Godfather of House,” Knuckles was a homegrown hero, so we asked Andre Johnson, leader of another local and legendary movement as the frontman of go-go band Rare Essence, to pay tribute to Knuckles in this week’s mix.

1. “Turn Down for What” — DJ Snake and Lil Jon

“I choose this track because Frankie always performed at the highest level.”

2. “Summer” — Calvin Harris

“This is the time of year when you heard Frankie’s music blasting in the streets of Chicago.”

3. “Get Lucky” —  Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams

“The dance sound of today seems to be a new version of house music — at least that’s what it sounds like to me.”

4.  “Ten Feet Tall” — DJ Afrojack featuring Wrabel

“As a true original that’s how Frankie seemed — 10 feet tall.”

5. “I Gotta Feeling” — The Black Eyed Peas

“I can hear this song being in his set.”

6. “Drop the Bomb” — Trouble Funk

“This is probably what it felt like when he really had the music crankin’.”

7. Block Party — Chuck Brown featuring DJ Kool

“I know he performed at a lot of those over the years.”

8. “Love Theme from ‘The Godfather’ ” — Chuck Brown

“This one’s self-explanatory.”
